USL PRO’s Franchise Carousel

Reigning United Soccer Leagues PRO Division champion Orlando City begins its title defense with a trip to Charleston Battery that kicks off the third tier’s new season on March 22.

Whether Phoenix F.C. will be among the 14 scheduled teams remains unclear.

The club broke its long-running silence Wednesday evening with a statement instructing that American Soccer Marketing LLC will no longer be operating a USL PRO franchise. ASM took control last November after USL terminated the original ownership rights held by BDR Sports, although many of the same individuals remained in charge.

Details of another ownership group are expected later today, leaving Phoenix with 17 days to sign players ahead of its scheduled season-opener at Colorado Rapids reserves on March 30.

Failure to return would make the Wolves the seventh franchise to exit USL PRO within three years of its first game being contested in April 2011.
