PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Riverhounds advanced to the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Wednesday with a 3-1 win over the New York Red Bulls U-23 team at Highmark Stadium.

Goals from Kevin Kerr, Jose Angulo and Rob Vincent gave the hosts their first win of the season after recording three ties and three losses in United Soccer Leagues Pro Division play.

Kerr’s opener on 10 minutes was cancelled out within two minutes by Sean Sheridan’s penalty kick for the young Bulls. The Riverhounds’ superior fitness and physical strength at set pieces eventually wore down the National Premier Soccer League side.

Pittsburgh hosts Chicago amateurs RWB Adria in the fourth round on May 28.
