PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Riverhounds advanced in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Wednesday after a hard-fought 3-2 win in extra time over national amateur champion RWB Adria at Highmark Stadium.
Jhonny Arteaga drilled a left-footed shot beyond RWB goalkeeper Igor Dimov with eight minutes remaining to prevent a second consecutive penalty shootout between the teams. Pittsburgh emerged victorious from the spot in last year’s competition after a 1-1 tie.
Adria’s Derek Huffman canceled out Danny Earls’ first-half strike before Taylor Bond steered a Johnny Morris free kick into Pittsburgh’s net to put the Chicago-based side ahead against the United Soccer Leagues strugglers.
Former Fulham striker Collins John volleyed the Riverhounds level on 80 minutes. Pittsburgh’s conditioning shone through in the additional periods against a wilting RWB rearguard to set up a fourth round visit to Chicago Fire on June 18.
